On Heaven

This life is an exile -
a desert we must cross to reach
our only true homeland which is Heaven.
Whoever strives to learn
the science of suffering in a holy manner
in this world, is happy.
God does not leave one
without consolation and without strength.

It will be in heaven
that you will seek a lasting treasure,
not in this world of misery
where we pass swiftly like
a fleeting shadow, Heaven!
That is where you must direct your heart.

O beautiful Heaven, our country!
We hope to dwell in you one day.
Yes, O divine Jesus,
we hope it from your infinite mercy.
We wish to go there, it is our heritage.
You acquired it for us and promised it to us.

Jesus Christ has won heaven for us,
and has promised it to us if we live
to the end with a living faith,
a strong hope, and a burning love for God
and our neighbor.
